Queensmith Loves | Lily Vanilli
Lily Jones (aka, Vanilli)
Branded ‘one of the most sought-after artisan bakers of her generation’ by Stylist magazine, and honoured as a ‘bakery goddess’ by TimeOut London, Lily Vanilli has become London’s hippest baker. The graphic designer turned self-taught baker oozes creativity, and with an ethos to shop locally, make the most of seasonal produce and never use food colouring, it’s no wonder Lily Vanilli has become London’s go-to baker for the most stylish sweet treats. Between juggling towering mille-feuille wedding cakes in the South of France and baking for good causes, Lily has published two recipes books, Sweet Tooth and A Zombie Ate My Cupcake, and is keeping busy with her newly opened Spitalfields Market stall.
The Original Bakery
In keeping with Columbia Road culture, the original bakery is open on Sundays only, but a trip is well worth the week-long wait. The menu changes with the seasons, filled with all the usual suspects: brownies, cakes, pastries (of course with added creative flare and unexpected twists), plus savoury soups and sausage rolls for a more wholesome meal. Operating as a true 21st Century bakery, gluten free and vegan options are always available. For those that can’t wait until the weekend, you’ll be pleased to know that Lily has recently opened a stall at Old Spitalfields Market. The ever changing menu keeps fans on their toes - follow their Instagram to keep up to date with their weekly bakes (and have a nosey at some showstopping commissioned cakes).
As delicious as every bake looks, Lily’s bespoke cakes commissioned for weddings, birthdays and events, are the real stars. Each design can be totally unique, although via the online contact form, you can browse inspiration and jot down ideas for Lily and her team to work with. Lily’s designs and canapés have been devoured by the famous and influential, from Jo Malone’s Christmas Campaign to private parties hosted by Elton John, Nigella Lawson and Madonna. If you're not sure where to start, a scroll through Lily's Instagram or flick through her recipes can fill you with inspiration. We love rose and pistachio combos, or for more indulgent occasions are partial to banana cake with salted caramel. Oh, and we wouldn't say no to that mille-feuille wedding cake...
