How Much Does it Cost to Resize a Ring?

Wondering how much it will cost to resize a ring or what might affect the cost? Whether it’s your engagement ring, wedding ring or a meaningful gift, resizing is often a simple solution for a better fit. In this guide, we’ll cover how much it costs to resize a ring, what affects the price and what to expect from the process.

Resizing is a simple way to fix a ring that doesn’t fit, but how much does it cost and what affects the price? Whether it’s an engagement ring, a wedding ring or special gift, resizing is a common and straightforward solution, but knowing how much to resize a ring depends on a few key factors. The cost can vary depending on whether the ring is plain or diamond-set, how intricate the design is, and how much the size needs adjusting. In this guide, we’ll explain what affects the price and what to consider before going ahead.

Common reasons for ring resizing

Ring resizing is a practical solution that many people need at some point, even when the ring was perfectly sized to begin with. Our hands can change over time, and so can the way a ring fits. In some cases, even a small difference in size can make a ring feel uncomfortable.

One of the most common reasons people need to resize their ring is due to weight changes. Gaining or losing even a small amount of weight can affect the size of your fingers. Pregnancy, ageing and temperature-related swelling can also impact how snugly a ring fits, for example, your knuckles might grow larger, but the base of your finger stays the same. These natural shifts often mean a resize is needed to keep your ring feeling secure and comfortable.

You might also need a resize if your ring was a gift or surprise, especially in the case of engagement rings where a best-guess size was chosen. At Queensmith, this is something we expect, and we offer a free resizing within 60 days of receiving your ring to make sure it fits just right.

Does resizing damage my ring?

When carried out by a skilled jeweller, resizing your ring won’t damage it, but it’s important to understand what’s involved and when a remake might be a better option. Whether your ring needs to go up or down in size, the process is relatively simple but requires precision, especially for intricate designs or diamond set bands.

To size down, a small section of the band is cut out and the ends are soldered back together, then polished to a seamless finish. To size up, the band is cut and an extra piece of metal is added to increase the circumference. In both cases, the ring is reshaped, soldered (usually with laser welding) and polished, with great care taken to maintain the original design and structure.

Overworking the metal through repeated resizing can cause issues like metal fatigue, loss of shape, or even loosened stones in some cases. For this reason, it’s generally recommended not to resize a ring more than two to three times. Beyond that, the structural integrity of the metal can become compromised, and in those cases, remaking the ring may be a safer and longer-lasting solution. A professional jeweller will always assess your ring and recommend the most suitable approach based on its design and condition.

How much will it cost to resize my ring?

The cost of resizing a ring in the UK typically ranges from £50 to £200, depending on the ring’s design and complexity. Simple resizes, such as adjusting a plain gold band by one size, will usually sit at the lower end, while intricate designs, particularly those with full diamond settings, may require more specialist work or even remaking. At Queensmith, resizing is free within 60 days of receiving your ring, and we’ll always provide a clear quote if resizing is needed after that.

Ring Type Estimated Cost (UK) Queensmith Price (After 60 Days)
Plain wedding band £50 – £90 £75
Engagement ring (plain or partial diamond band) £70 – £150 £95
Diamond wedding ring (partial diamond coverage) £90 – £150 £95
Fully diamond set ring (100% coverage) £150 – £200+ POA

What affects the price when resizing a ring?

While many resizings are straightforward, certain factors can make the process more complex, and that can affect the cost depending on your jeweller. At Queensmith, we charge a fixed fee for resizing after 60 days, but here are some of the reasons prices may vary more generally:

  • Type of metal: Some metals, like platinum and white gold, require higher temperatures and specialist tools to resize. However, at Queensmith, we charge the same regardless of metal type, whether it's platinum, 18k yellow gold, rose gold or white gold.
  • Complexity of design: Rings with lots of stones, intricate detailing or engraving take more time and care to resize cleanly. In some cases, engraving may need to be redone after resizing.
  • Size adjustment required: A slight change (e.g. a quarter or half size) is simpler than resizing a ring by multiple full sizes. The larger the adjustment, the more work required to maintain the integrity and balance of the design.
  • Gemstone placement: If there are diamonds or gemstones close to the section being resized, they may need to be removed and reset to prevent loosening during the process.
  • Jeweller’s expertise and location: The skill of the goldsmith and where the service is carried out can impact price. Resizing done in-house by trained experts, like Queensmith in Hatton Garden, ensures high standards and no visible trace of alteration.

Do different materials affect the cost of resizing a ring?

Technically, yes – different metals require different tools and techniques to resize. Platinum, for example, has a higher melting point and is more labour-intensive to work with than gold. White gold may need rhodium plating after resizing to maintain its bright finish. However, at Queensmith, we charge the same fee across all metals.

While some metals require more specialist tools or post-resizing polishing, our process is designed to maintain quality and consistency, which means your resizing cost stays the same regardless of metal.

Which rings cannot be resized?

While many rings can be resized, there are certain designs that make resizing more difficult, or occasionally, not possible at all. In these cases, a remake may be the safest and most effective option.

  • Eternity rings: Resizing a ring that features diamonds all the way around the band can be very challenging. Because there’s no plain section of metal to work with, adjusting the size without disrupting the setting isn’t always feasible. That said, it’s not impossible, and we’ll always assess your eternity ring to see whether a resize or a remake is the best option.
  • Diamond band engagement rings: Engagement rings with diamond bands can be resized, but the complexity depends on how much of the band is set with stones. At Queensmith, we typically design our diamond bands with around 60% stone coverage, leaving a blank section of metal to allow for future resizing. For bands set 100% with diamonds, resizing may not be possible and a remake may be required.
  • Tungsten or titanium rings: These metals are extremely hard and brittle, making them very difficult, and often impossible, to cut or reshape. Queensmith does not offer resizing services for rings made from these materials.
  • Tension set rings: Rings that hold the centre stone in place using tension (without prongs or bezels) rely on precise pressure. Resizing can compromise the setting’s ability to hold the stone securely, so it’s often not recommended.
  • Antique or heirloom rings: While Queensmith doesn’t work on heirloom pieces, in general, older rings may have fragile settings or worn metals that aren’t stable enough for resizing. It’s always best to have a specialist assess the condition before attempting any alterations.

If you're unsure whether your ring can be resized, it's always worth speaking to an expert – they’ll be able to guide you through the safest and most appropriate options.

Top tips for getting your ring resized

If you're planning to resize your ring, there are a few important steps to take to make sure the process goes smoothly, and that your ring returns in perfect condition. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Return to the original jeweller: Whenever possible, go back to the jeweller who made your ring. They'll be most familiar with the design and construction, and will know the best way to resize it safely.
  • Get a clear price estimate: Always ask for a full cost breakdown before the work begins, especially if the design is complex or may require additional services like engraving or rhodium plating.
  • Check the warranty or guarantee: Some jewellers offer free resizing within a certain timeframe (Queensmith offers free resizing within 60 days of collection). Ask if the work is covered under warranty and what’s included.
  • Ask about cleaning and polishing: A professional resize should include a clean and polish, so your ring looks as good as new when returned.
  • Try it on straight away: When collecting your resized ring, make sure to try it on in-store to check the fit, comfort and security.
  • Work with a specialist: Choose a jeweller experienced in your ring’s metal and setting style. This is especially important for diamond bands, where stone security is key.
  • Check your diamond’s certificate number: If your ring has a certified diamond, ask to see the GIA or IGI inscription on the stone after resizing. This ensures you're collecting the same diamond you originally purchased.

Resizing should be a seamless process when done properly. We always advise couples to ask questions, from pricing to stone security, and to try the ring on immediately after. It’s the small checks that give you full confidence in the result.

What are the alternatives to resizing a ring?

If you're not ready to resize your ring, or it's not suitable for resizing, there are a few temporary or non-invasive options that can help adjust the fit. These solutions are particularly helpful if your finger size fluctuates or if you’re unsure about making permanent changes just yet:

  • Ring guards: Small metal or silicone inserts that sit inside the band to make the ring fit more snugly.
  • Sizing beads: Tiny metal beads added to the inside of the band to help prevent the ring from spinning.
  • Spring inserts: Flexible metal bands fitted inside the ring that gently adjust to your finger.
  • Resizing bars: Temporary bars added to the inside of the ring, ideal for those with fluctuating finger sizes.

How long does it take to get a ring resized?

Ring resizing typically takes around one working week at Queensmith. However, the timeframe can vary depending on the complexity of the design, for example, if the ring has a diamond band, engraving or requires remaking, it may take longer.

Your consultant will give you a clear timeframe once they've assessed the ring. We always carry out a full quality check and polish before returning your resized ring to ensure it looks and feels as good as new.

Finding the right jeweller

Choosing the right jeweller to resize your ring is important. Look for a reputable specialist, ideally one that’s a member of the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), which means they follow strict standards of professionalism and ethical conduct. Don’t be afraid to ask for reviews or examples of previous resizing work to ensure your ring is in safe hands. At Queensmith, all resizing is carried out by our expert in-house goldsmiths, and we offer complimentary resizing within 60 days of receiving your ring.
