Proposal Stories: Elliott & Robin
Having joined Queensmith from the world of books, Claudia has immersed herself in the realm of fine jewellery and works closely with the rest of the team to develop innovative strategies, insightful guides and engaging articles.
Cruising across sapphire blue waters on a private yacht in Capri, Elliott orchestrated a magical surprise proposal for his partner Robin, complete with a dazzling bespoke halo engagement ring. This is their story. . .
How It All Started
Elliott and Robin's journey began in 2018 in the bustling city of Hong Kong. ‘Robin was born and grew up there, and I just happened to find myself there fortuitously through a career opportunity,’ said Elliott. ‘Exactly how we met I'll leave hush-hush but our relationship quickly grew as we embarked on various travel adventures together around Asia.’ Fast forward six years, and the couple recently tied the knot in July 2024 – but more on that later.
The Proposal
Determined to keep the proposal a complete surprise, Elliott meticulously planned every detail. ‘It was more perfect than I planned. I had arranged the location, organised a private yacht and a secret photographer, who pretended to be part of the crew,’ Elliott explained. ‘What I hadn't planned was the company of other tourists, on other nearby boats, who witnessed the proposal and let roar an incredible round of applause and well-wishes – this was an exceptional final touch to our memory of the proposal.’
For Robin, the proposal was a whirlwind of emotions. ‘I was elated, surprised and very emotional,’ she shared. ‘In fact, I was blindfolded for part of the journey and I started crying when Perfect by Ed Sheeran came on because I knew in my heart Elliott was going to ask me to marry him. Then seeing him on one knee, the water was slightly rocky at the time, and holding the ring, my heart just swelled. I was so eager to say “yes” that I actually replied “of course”!’
Following the proposal, the couple toasted their engagement with champagne. ‘We cracked open a bottle, and the cork is still with us today, displayed on our coffee table at home as a memory of the occasion,’ Elliott recalled. ‘The captain had some homemade limoncello, made from the huge lemons grown in Capri, which he also offered up as a toast. A couple of drinks later, we disembarked the yacht, and went for a beautiful dinner and some shopping.’
Though Elliott’s parents were already aware of his plans, he was still eager to tell them the happy news. ‘I called them first to let them know that Robin had actually said yes! After that, we both told the rest of our family and close friends.’
The Engagement Ring
When it came to the engagement ring, Elliott wanted something truly special – to design a bespoke ring that was both personal and meaningful, incorporating cultural influences from Robin’s Hong Kong heritage. Elliott based the design on Queensmith's Classic Oberon halo ring, adding his own personal touches to create something truly unique. ‘Eight is regarded as a lucky or auspicious number in her culture, so our round centre diamond was 1.8 carats, surrounded by a halo of sixteen smaller diamonds, or two sets of eight, with eight diamonds on each of the shoulders and both sides of the bridge,’ explained Elliott.
While Robin admits she’d never really imagined what her engagement ring would look like, it was the deep thought, care and effort that Elliott put into creating the ring that meant the most to her. ‘It was everything I hoped for and more,’ Robin said. With Queensmith’s expert guidance, Elliott brought a ring to life that exceeded even Robin’s wildest dreams. ‘I appreciated the knowledge and expertise that Queensmith brought with regards to design inputs, materials and craftsmanship techniques,’ Elliott recalls. ‘Queensmith instilled a confidence that the final creation would be beautiful and in-line with the design and attributes agreed from the outset. Queensmith certainly delivered on this.’
The Wedding
In July 2024, the couple celebrated their wedding at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hyde Park, London – a venue that perfectly symbolised their union.‘With its rich history in Hong Kong and setting in London, we felt it represents us best – the two different cultures coming together,’ said Elliott. ‘We had around 100 guests in total coming from around the world, from Hong Kong to Singapore and Canada, all joining us on our special day. It was truly special and unforgettable.’ Robin added: ‘It was the best day of our lives and we couldn't be happier to share the day not only with one another but also our loved ones.’
Having worked closely with Elliott to craft a mesmerising halo engagement ring that perfectly captured their unique love story, we are honoured to have played a role in this couple’s journey together. The Queensmith team wishes them endless happiness as they embark on this new chapter of their lives, and look forward to celebrating many more joyful milestones with them in the years to come.
