Travel Engagement Rings – Are They Worth it?

When it comes to planning the perfect proposal, more couples than ever are doing it abroad – our 2024 Marriage Proposal Report revealed that over 53% of British couples pop the question abroad. Whether you’re heading somewhere tropical or ticking off a dream bucket list destination, it's no surprise you're wondering: should you travel with your real ring – or opt for a travel engagement ring?
There’s something romantic about a proposal under the sun – but let’s be honest, the idea of losing or damaging a high-value engagement ring while you’re away is enough to stress anyone out. That’s where a travel engagement ring, also known as a 'dummy engagement ring' or 'temporary engagement ring', comes in. It’s a savvy, stress-free solution that lets you focus on the moment, without the fear of loss or theft. But before you settle for a placeholder ring, it’s worth considering whether the moment calls for the real thing – and if you're still looking, our Engagement Ring Buying Guide will help you find the ring to mark your most meaningful milestone.
What is a holiday engagement ring?
A travel or holiday engagement ring is a lower-cost alternative to your real engagement ring, designed for travel. Often made with imitation stones or less valuable materials, such as zirconia stones, travel rings offer peace of mind when abroad, but can't compare to the quality, sparkle or sentiment of a real engagement ring.
You might choose a holiday engagement ring as a placeholder for your proposal abroad, or wear it long-term when travelling to avoid the risks tied to your original ring. At Queensmith, we don’t create or sell travel rings – but for clients with proposals abroad, we can occasionally offer a temporary setting to safely house the chosen stone until you're home.
Should you use a temporary engagement ring?
Travelling with your engagement ring can feel daunting, and understandably so. From airport security and unfamiliar environments to beach days and hotel safes, there’s always a small risk of loss, damage or theft. That’s why some couples consider using a temporary or dummy engagement ring while abroad.
While a travel ring can offer peace of mind, it’s worth remembering that it won’t match the beauty, durability or emotional weight of the real thing. In many cases, insuring your real engagement ring and taking a few sensible precautions can be the more meaningful – and memorable – option.
Pros and cons of a travel engagement ring
There are many positives and negatives when it comes to using fake engagement rings. We’ll take you through a few of them so you can decide what the best course of action is for you.
Pros of a travel engagement ring
- Security: You won’t need to worry about insuring or protecting a high-value item while you’re away.
- Peace of mind: Relax and enjoy your travels without constantly checking your finger or removing your ring for activities.
- A variety of styles: A fake engagement ring for holiday is a great chance to test drive a new design while your original stays safe at home. You can explore different looks and fits, and even have multiple fake engagement rings for every occasion – see our engagement ring styles guide for inspiration.
- Budget-friendly: Temporary engagement rings are typically much more affordable than bespoke or diamond designs.
- Adventure-ready: Perfect for beach days, hiking trips or watersports without the fear of damaging the real thing.
- A chance to choose together: If you’re proposing abroad, a temporary engagement ring means you can celebrate the moment – then shop together for the real thing later. It’s a great way to ensure they love the ring style and avoids the possibility of getting the ring size wrong – although if you’ve had a look at our ring size guide, that shouldn’t be a problem.
Cons of a travel engagement ring
- Perceived deception: If you're proposing abroad, some might feel uncomfortable proposing with a ring that isn’t ‘the one’. Be sure to communicate the sentiment behind the choice and assure them the “real” one is safe at home.
- Quality & appearance: While they’ve come a long way, temporary engagement rings often won’t match the craftsmanship or sparkle of the real deal. They’re perfect for peace of mind, but may lack the emotional and visual impact of your final ring.
- Not built to last: These rings are typically made with less durable materials like sterling silver and imitation stones, which can wear down quickly or lose their sparkle.
- Extra cost: Even though they’re budget-friendly, a temporary engagement ring is still an extra expense. Some couples may prefer to put that money towards the final ring instead.
- Environmental impact: Some lower-cost fake engagement rings for travel are made using non-sustainable materials or fast-fashion production methods, which may not align with your values around conscious purchasing.
- May underwhelm: Some clients find that a travel ring doesn't quite capture the magic of the moment – especially if your partner was expecting a high-quality diamond design.
What should my travel engagement ring look like?
Your travel engagement ring can look however you like. A popular choice is a cubic zirconia centre stone set in 925 sterling silver – a budget-friendly option that looks convincingly close to the real thing but far less durable, so won’t cause too much worry if misplaced while abroad. While it won’t replace the craftsmanship of a Queensmith engagement ring, it’s a smart stand-in while your real ring stays safe at home.
Wondering if your travel ring needs to look just like your real one? The answer is no. It doesn’t need to be a replica. In fact, many couples enjoy trying out different engagement ring styles – from vintage-inspired halos to bold solitaires. It’s a chance to have some fun with a style you wouldn’t usually wear day-to-day.
While these rings can be styled to resemble a real engagement ring, most are made using cubic zirconia and silver, and won’t have the craftsmanship or sparkle of a Queensmith ring.
How do I take care of my travel engagement ring?
If you're fond of your travel engagement ring and want to keep it as pristine as possible, there are a couple of tips we can recommend to keeping it as shiny as your real ring.
Firstly, we recommend not wearing your temporary engagement ring all the time. Although it's made of a strong material, it isn’t as tough as diamond and may start tarnishing if worn daily. When you’re not using it, keep your travel engagement ring in a dust bag and wipe it with a soft cloth to restore its shine.
Additionally, we would recommend removing any fake engagement rings whilst bathing, showering or washing your hands, as water can cause erosion of the metal. Also try not to apply hand creams or beauty products when wearing your temporary engagement ring. Even excessive sweat may cause oxidisation of the metal, so we also recommend removing it when exercising and sleeping to prevent dirt and sweat collecting.
Whilst these recommendations keep your travel engagement ring pristine, we realise that the function of this temporary engagement ring is to allow you to do things you can’t do with your real ring on, like swimming or engaging activities. Therefore, if you’re not looking to completely replace your engagement ring, we wouldn't worry too much about keeping your temporary engagement ring perfect. Buffering it with a cloth and keeping it dust-free is enough for most fake engagement rings – after all, they’re the substitute for the real deal.
What if you still want to take your engagement ring when travelling?
The best way to propose abroad? Take the real ring – insured and well cared for.
If you’ve decided you’d rather travel with your high-value engagement ring, it’s all about taking the right precautions. First things first: make sure your ring is fully covered by your travel insurance, especially if you’re planning a destination proposal. Having that extra layer of protection can offer peace of mind should anything unexpected happen.
At Queensmith, we’ve thought of everything to help you feel more confident while travelling with your precious engagement ring, including how to get it through airport security without spoiling the surprise. Besides temporary engagement rings, it's all about sentimental value
When it comes down to it, it’s not all about the ring – it’s about the sentiment behind it. Whether you opt for a travel engagement ring, a family heirloom or no ring at all, the meaning you place on that moment far outweighs the price tag. A heartfelt proposal and a beautiful holiday with the person you love is what truly makes it memorable.
If a fake engagement ring for your holiday doesn’t feel quite right, there are other thoughtful options. For some, the ring isn’t essential – but if you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime moment, many find that nothing replaces the sentiment and sparkle of a thoughtfully chosen engagement ring. Do you have additional questions? No problem, let us help you through the process
A travel engagement ring can be a handy stand-in when you're heading abroad or doing something hands-on, like swimming, hiking or other activities where your real ring might be at risk. It offers some peace of mind when you’d rather leave your actual engagement ring safely at home.
That said, travel rings aren’t designed for long-term wear. They’re usually made with less durable materials, so we’d only recommend wearing one occasionally – and always with the understanding that it’s a placeholder, not a permanent alternative. If you’re concerned about travelling with your real ring, insuring it and taking a little extra care is often the better option.
Not at all – some people prefer a travel ring in a completely different style. Just keep in mind, your partner may have imagined a particular design, so it’s worth managing expectations.
Travel or ‘fake’ engagement rings, often made with silver and imitation stones like moissanite or cubic zirconia, are designed to look the part, but they’re nowhere near as durable or precious as a real engagement ring. While they can handle some wear and tear, they won’t hold up to daily use in the same way a well-crafted diamond ring will. Over time, you’ll likely notice discolouration, scratches or loss of brilliance.
They can serve a purpose for peace of mind when travelling, but many couples find they fall short of the real thing, both in quality and sentiment. If you're concerned about taking your real ring abroad, we'd recommend simply making sure it’s insured and that you take a little extra care. That way, you can propose with the ring you’ve thoughtfully chosen, without compromise.
