Europe is home to some of the world's most iconic proposal destinations, from the romance of bustling cities and picturesque beaches to breathtaking mountain landscapes. When it comes to the best places to propose in Europe, places like Lake Como, Paris and Rome often steal the spotlight. However, beyond these famous hotspots lies a collection of hidden gems offering equally stunning settings, but without the crowds. For couples seeking a more intimate and memorable moment, these lesser-known destinations provide the perfect backdrop to get down on one knee in peace.

This becomes even more significant when we asked our Instagram followers about their proposal preferences. While 78% said they would still like to be proposed to abroad, 63% agreed that large crowds would detract from the moment. In fact, an overwhelming 88% said they would prefer a private proposal, highlighting the growing appeal of more secluded and intimate destinations.

To find out where to propose in Europe for a more intimate and secluded engagement, we compiled a list of 60 of the most visited European cities and towns. We then evaluated each location based on several key factors that contribute to a romantic but secluded proposal experience:

  • Sunshine Factor: We analysed annual sunshine hours, as good weather can help create the perfect backdrop for an outdoor proposal, whether on a beach, clifftop or scenic viewpoint.

  • Private Factor: To identify destinations with the best chance of a secluded proposal, we assessed crowd density, tourism pressure, noise and light pollution, natural attractions, and Instagram popularity to determine how busy each location is likely to feel.

  • Romance Factor: We assessed each destination's romantic appeal by analysing the proportion of 5-star hotels, romantic restaurants, and annual sunset visibility, offering the perfect setting for an unforgettable European proposal.

  • Private and Luxury factor: We evaluated the availability of private and luxury experiences, such as exclusive boat tours, private dining, and secluded excursions, which can help create a more intimate Europe proposal spot.

  • Safety Factor: To assess peace of mind when travelling with an engagement ring, we analysed each destination's Global Peace Index ranking, Crime Index, and Safety Index scores.By combining these measures, we were able to identify destinations that not only offer a romantic setting, but also provide peace of mind for couples travelling with high-value jewellery.

How to choose the perfect engagement ring

Now that you’ve got your destination chosen, the next step is choosing the perfect engagement ring for your partner.

At Queensmith, you'll find a wide selection of engagement rings to suit every taste and budget. However, if you’re unsure where to begin, here are our top tips:

1. Understand their style

Before looking at diamonds and budgets, consider your partner's lifestyle and personal taste. Pay attention to the jewellery they already wear, their preferred metal colour and the diamond shapes they might be drawn to. Whether they would suit a classic style, such as a round cut diamond or a more contemporary look, such as an elongated cushion cut, having a clear idea of their style will make the entire process much easier.

2. Learn the basics

Getting familiar with the engagement ring essentials, including the 4Cs of diamonds (cut, colour, clarity and carat), will help you make a more informed decision. It's also worth considering different metal types, settings and ring styles, such as solitaire and halo designs, to find the perfect combination. If you're planning a proposal, taking the time to work out your partner's ring size can help make the process much smoother.

3. Set your budget

Setting an engagement ring budget that feels comfortable for you is one of the most important steps in the buying process. The old "three months' salary" rule is outdated. Today, it's about finding the right balance between quality, style and what works for your finances.

Your budget may also influence whether you choose a lab grown diamond or a natural diamond, as each offers different benefits and price points. Lab diamond prices often make it possible to choose a larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget, while natural diamonds are valued for their rarity and long-standing tradition.

From dramatic mountain peaks to secluded coastal escapes, these hidden gems showcase some of the best places to propose in Europe. Whether you're planning a grand romantic gesture or a quiet, private moment, each destination offers something truly unforgettable for couples deciding where to propose in Europe.
