What are Certified Sustainability Rated Diamonds?
Not all lab diamonds are produced sustainably. As IGI concur, 'the vast majority are not. The presses and reactors used to produce them require enormous amounts of energy, and most lab grown diamond growers power their operations by burning fossil fuels.'
That's why Queensmith created a certifiably sustainable collection of lab diamonds, independently verified by the SCS.
The SCS-awarded Certified Sustainability Rated Diamond is a pioneering verification that assures diamond buyers that the gem they purchase has been created through ethical and sustainable production.
The independently awarded certification ensures that every Grown by Queensmith diamond has been responsibly produced, adhering to the highest standards of environmental and ethical responsibility.
The third-party SCS undertake thorough assessments to ensure that the diamonds meet rigorous standards for ethical stewardship, including fair labour practices, diamond traceability and minimal environmental impact. No other standard provides this level of assurance to jewellery manufacturers, retailers or customers.
This is a next-level of diamond industry transparency that as a gemmologist, I've been longing to offer my clients.

Are Lab Grown Diamonds more ethical?
In today's UK diamond market, you can be pretty certain that any new diamond in circulation has been mined or created ethically. This is thanks to systems like the Kimberley Process that strictly prohibit the trade of diamonds from any conflict country. That said, you may have doubts over your diamond's origin and traceability, which isn't often clear or readily available.
However, you can be 100% certain of your diamond's ethical and sustainable origins with a Grown by Queensmith lab diamond.
That's because we know exactly where, how and in what conditions Grown by Queensmith diamonds are created. The European laboratory we work with have established a fair and pleasant working environment for employees, as independently verified by the SCS's requirements for the 12 Principles of Ethical Stewardship. The SCS also verify that the production process does no harm to humans or the environment, and thanks to partial use of green energy and off-setting the rest, verifies that Grown by Queensmith diamonds are created with net zero carbon footprint.
This collection was formed to give Queensmith clients full transparency when creating an ethical engagement ring – allowing buyers to trace their diamond's origin and revel in the knowledge that their diamond has only brought goodness into the world.

In the HPHT process, graphite (pure carbon) is subjected to high heat and pressure, using electric pulses and metal to transform it into a diamond over several days. CVD diamonds are made by placing a small diamond piece in a chamber with heated, carbon-rich gas. This causes carbon to stick to the diamond, growing it layer by layer. Generally, HPHT creates higher quality diamonds, as CVD can quickly produce diamonds with internal flaws or a brownish colour. While CVD diamonds may need treatment to improve their appearance, which can leave them looking less clear, HPHT diamonds typically emerge with superior, gem-quality clarity without the need for additional treatment.
The energy consumption depends on many factors and conditions such as the size of the stones and the production schedule. That being said, we can calculate based on the average energy consumption vs average carats produced that the average UK household energy usage could create a 1.00ct diamond, twice over, every day.
Yes, Grown by Queensmith diamonds are produced in part with green energy, and rest is offset. Green energy is provided from the grid, including wind and solar power. While it currently isn't possible to produce enough energy with renewables alone, the rest of the energy used is carbon offset.
To bolster sustainable efforts, numerous solar panels have been installed at the laboratory – directly powering the operations and contributing to a greener diamond industry.
