Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular dates of the year to propose, with around 6 million people getting engaged every year. But what many don’t realise is that finding and crafting the perfect engagement ring takes time. The lead-up to 14th February is one of the busiest times of year for jewellers, and if you leave it too late, your options can narrow quickly.

So, how soon should you buy an engagement ring for a Valentine’s Day proposal? And what happens if you’ve left it (a bit) late? Here’s everything you need to know, including order deadlines and last-minute options that still feel meaningful.

When should I buy an engagement ring for Valentine’s Day?

All Queensmith rings are made to order in our Hatton Garden workshop, but lead times can vary depending on the ring design you choose.

  • Core Collection engagement rings – order by 13th January 2026.
If you're after a signature Queensmith design, you’ll need to place your order by 13th January for Valentine’s delivery. This gives our team of talented artisans time to craft your ring with your chosen diamond, and gives you time to plan the perfect proposal.

  • Quickship Collection engagement rings – order by 6th February 2026.
Need something sooner? Our Quickship rings are a selection of our most popular designs, semi-crafted with your choice of natural or lab grown diamond. Ready in just 1 week, order by 6th February to receive your ring in time for a spontaneous Valentine’s Day proposal.

  • Bespoke engagement rings – order 4 to 5 weeks in advance.
Designing a completely one-of-a-kind ring takes a little more time. While the making of a bespoke ring typically takes 4 to 5 weeks, we recommend starting your design journey at least 6 to 8 weeks before your proposal date. This gives you time to explore ideas, talk through the details with your design consultant, and ensure everything is exactly as you’d envisioned, without rushing the process.

Can I propose without a ring?

Yes, and a lot of people do. If you’re unsure what your partner would love, or want to design the ring together afterwards, you can propose with a placeholder, a loose diamond or simply the question. Then you have the option to book an appointment together and create something personal you’ll both love.

Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered

Choosing the right ring can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re comparing styles, deciding between natural and lab grown diamonds or not sure where to start, our gemmologists will guide you every step of the way.
