How to create your custom engagement ring

Designing a custom engagement ring with Queensmith is a low-pressure, collaborative process, guided by your ideas and brought to life by our in-house experts. Here’s how it works, from first inspiration to final polish.

1. Book your consultation

Book a free, no-obligation consultation at one of our showrooms in London or Birmingham, or join a virtual consultation from anywhere in the UK. Bring whatever inspires you – photos, sketches or a favourite design from our core engagement ring collection – and a partner, friend or family member if you'd like.

2. Refine your design

Your design consultant, a qualified gemmologist, will help you choose the setting style, metal and finishing touches, such as a hidden halo or an engraving. Every design works with any diamond shape and is shaped around your budget.

3. Choose your diamond or gemstone

Our gemmologists prepare a selection of natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds or gemstones to suit your style and budget, and explain how the 4Cs – cut, colour, clarity and carat (a measure of weight, not size) – affect each one. Every diamond is independently certified by an institution such as the GIA or IGI, and you always have the final say.

4. Review your CAD design

Once you've placed your order, we create a detailed 3D CAD (computer-aided design) render of your ring to ensure a structurally-sound design that perfectly fits your selected diamond or gemstone.

5. Let us take care of the rest

Our goldsmiths and diamond setters craft your ring in our Hatton Garden workshops, with every step under one roof. You'll get an exact due date when you order, then collect your ring in store or have it delivered free, fully insured and tracked.

We don’t charge extra for our bespoke service. Our business model is built on in-house, made-to-order production. Because you shouldn't have to pay a premium for creating a ring exactly as you envisage!

Custom or bespoke engagement ring: What's the difference?

A custom engagement ring and a bespoke engagement ring both mean a ring designed and made for you, rather than bought ready-made. Jewellers use the terms interchangeably, and there are two ways to create one with us:

  • Personalise one of our designs: Start with a ring from our core engagement ring collection and change the details – the metal, the claws, the band width or a hidden detail only the two of you know about.
  • Create your own design: Bring your ideas, sketches or inspiration photos and design something new from scratch with our designers.

Either way, your ring is made to order in our Hatton Garden workshops. For a closer look at each choice, read our six steps to designing your own engagement ring.

Design your own engagement ring online

You can design your own engagement ring online by choosing one of our core designs and making it yours. Here are some choices you can make right now:

  • Any core design from our engagement ring collection
  • Your metal: Platinum, or 18K yellow, white or rose gold
  • Your choice of diamond shape
  • Your ring size
  • Your centre diamond, natural or lab grown
  • The option of a diamond bezel or bridge
  • A plain, scallop or pavé band

I wanted a jeweller who had the same vision as me. I was very specific... but many jewellers were rigid when it came to the design and diamond choices. That’s when a friend recommended Queensmith – the rest is history!

Frequently asked questions

Custom engagement rings typically take 4–6 weeks to craft once your order is confirmed. We recommend allowing 6–7 weeks for the whole process, from your first consultation to receiving your ring, and you'll get an exact due date when you order. Short on time? Our Quickship engagement rings are ready and delivered in seven days.

The cost of a custom ring depends mostly on the diamond you choose – its carat, cut, colour and clarity – then on the metal and how much design detail you add. Your consultant will shape options around your budget and show you which choices make the biggest difference to the price.

If you have a clear picture of the ring you want, or you can't find it in a collection, a custom ring lets you get every detail right. You don't need a finished design to start. In fact, most of our clients begin with one of our core designs and personalise it.

There's no pressure to decide at your first consultation, so you can take all the thinking time you need.

Yes. Book a free virtual consultation by secure video call from anywhere in the UK, with the same consultants who work in our showrooms, and see diamonds and gemstones live on camera.

You can also order our core designs online, choosing the metal, ring size and centre diamond; custom details and fully custom designs are created with a consultant.

Consultations are free and typically last an hour. Beforehand, we'll ask about your budget, style and timeline so we can prepare. On the day, you'll compare diamonds or gemstones, try on sample rings (in person) and talk through your design – and in London, your appointment includes a tour of our workshop. You're welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member.

Small details make a ring feel personal. You could engrave a date or message of up to 25 characters inside the band, add a hidden halo of diamonds beneath the centre stone, or set a meaningful gemstone into the band.
