About our diamond earrings
Every pair of Queensmith diamond earrings starts with our gemmologists finding two diamonds that match. The same shape, near-identical dimensions and the same colour and clarity grades, so neither earring outshines the other. Our goldsmiths then make each pair to order in our Hatton Garden workshop in London.

Matching a pair of diamonds is harder than most people expect. Two stones can share the same carat weight and grades on paper and and still look different side by side. That's why we match each pair by eye.
Diamond stud earrings
A diamond stud is a single diamond set to sit flat against the earlobe, held by a post and back. It’s the most wearable diamond earring there is – easily paired with a T-shirt and simple to wear every day, yet polished enough for a wedding.
Claw, rubover or halo: Choosing your stud setting
The setting changes the look of a stud, how large the diamond appears and how well it’s protected.
- Round 4 Claw: Four small metal claws hold the diamond, so more of the stone is on show. Seen from the front, the diamond takes on a slightly squarer outline.
- Round 6 Claw: Six claws keep the outline perfectly round and give the diamond an extra point of security. This is the classic solitaire stud.
- Round Rubover: A thin rim of metal surrounds the diamond instead of claws. It’s minimal and modern, and with no claws to catch on hair, jumpers or scarves, it’s a practical choice for everyday wear.
- Round Halo: A round centre diamond framed by a ring of melee diamonds (small diamonds used as accents), each matched in size and quality. The halo adds sparkle and makes the centre diamond look larger, so it’s a good choice for a dressier stud or to match a halo engagement ring.
Which diamond shape suits you?
Round diamonds reflect the most light, which is why round diamond stud earrings are the most popular choice. Pear and marquise diamonds look longer on the ear and can make a small stone appear larger. Princess diamonds are crisp and square, and emerald diamonds have long step facets that give a cooler, glassier flash rather than lots of sparkle.
Many clients choose earrings to match the shape of their engagement ring for a more cohesive look. For more information, take a look at our diamond shapes guide, where you can compare each one in more detail.
What size diamond stud earrings should I choose?
At Queensmith, our earring sizes are listed as total carat weight (TCW). This is the combined weight of both diamonds. "1 carat diamond earrings" therefore means two 0.50ct diamonds, not a 1ct diamond in each ear.
Carat measures weight rather than size, so diamonds of the same carat weight can look slightly different depending on shape and cut.
Take a look at the table below to help you make an informed decision:
| Desired look | Total carat weight | Each diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Delicate or second piercing | 0.20–0.40tcw | 0.10–0.20ct |
| Classic everyday studs | 0.60–1.00tcw | 0.30–0.50ct |
| Statement studs | 1.50–2.00tcw | 0.75–1.00ct |
For a stacked look, many people graduate their studs, with the largest pair on the love and smaller ones further up the ear.
Lab grown diamond earrings
Lab grown diamond earrings are set with diamonds grown in a laboratory rather than mined. They have the same physical, chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds, and every lab grown diamond we use is independently certified by an institution such as the IGI or GIA, which grade diamonds to an agreed international standard.
The main difference is price. A lab grown diamond typically costs considerably less than a natural diamond of the same size and quality, so lab grown earrings let you choose larger diamond studs or a higher grade for the same budget.
Simply select the style you like, and make your selection between natural or lab grown diamond earrings.
Lab grown vs natural diamond earrings

Platinum and gold diamond earrings
All our diamond earrings are available in platinum, 18K white gold or 18K yellow gold.
- Platinum diamond earrings: Platinum is naturally white, so it never needs replating and keeps its colour for life. It's denser than gold, so studs feel reassuringly solid, and considered the best metal for sensitive skin.
- 18K white gold diamond earrings: A bright white finish created by rhodium plating, which wears gradually over time. Rhodium replating is complimentary for Queensmith-made 18K white gold pieces as part of our Lifetime Care Package.
- 18K yellow gold diamond earrings: A warm, classic gold that suits fancy shapes like pear and marquise well.
White metals make a diamond look icier, while yellow gold adds warmth. If you're unsure which suits you, our guide to ring metals covers how each wears.
Caring for your diamond earrings
Diamond earrings pick up hand cream, hair products and make-up quickly, which dulls their sparkle. To clean them at home, soak them for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid. Gently brush behind each diamond with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, and put earrings on after perfume and hairspray rather than before.
Store each pair separately so the diamonds can’t scratch your other jewellery, and check the backs regularly.
Every Queensmith purchase comes with our Lifetime Care Package, including free professional cleaning whenever you need it and annual checks.

Start with your budget, then decide between lab grown and natural diamonds, since that choice has the biggest effect on price. Next, choose a shape and setting, and finally a size. Our gemmologists match every pair within the colourless D–F range, so you don’t need to compare grades diamond by diamond.
Yes. Our gemmologists match each pair by size, shape and proportions before checking that the cut, colour and clarity grades align, so the two earrings look identical to the eye.
We recommend prioritising cut and colour. An Excellent or Ideal cut and a D, E or F colour grade give a bright, colourless diamond.
Clarity grades like VS2 or SI1 keep costs down, because any inclusions (tiny natural features inside the diamond) aren’t visible to the naked eye.
The price depends mainly on total carat weight and on whether you choose lab grown or natural diamonds, followed by shape and metal. Lab grown diamond earrings let you choose a larger size for the same budget. Use the filters above to see prices for each combination.
Round is the most classic and reflects the most light. Pear and marquise look longer on the ear, and emerald gives a subtler, glassier flash. Choosing the same shape as your engagement ring can also create a matching set for a more cohesive look.
Your diamond earrings from Queensmith will arrive in our much-loved earrings box. The design of the box is luxe and plush. You can keep the earring box to keep your earrings in when you’re not wearing them.
Delivery within the UK is free, tracked and insured, and needs a signature on arrival.
Yes. Lab grown diamonds are diamonds, with the same physical, chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds. The difference is how they’re formed. Lab grown diamonds are formed in a laboratory rather than underground.
Both look white and suit diamonds. Platinum stays white for life with no replating, often developing a vintage-inspired patina over time, and is often chosen for sensitive skin.
18K white gold is rhodium plated, which we replate for free on Queensmith-made pieces.
Yes. Diamonds are the hardest natural material, and studs sit close to the ear, so they’re ideal for everyday wear. Rubover settings are especially practical because there are no claws to catch on clothing.
Just remember to take them off for swimming and the gym, and have them checked once a year.
For many people, diamond studs are the piece they wear most, because they suit almost every outfit and occasion.
They’re a popular way to mark a milestone, like a birthday, promotion or anniversary, or to complement an engagement ring.
Halo diamond earrings have a centre diamond surrounded by a ring of smaller diamonds. The halo catches extra light and makes the centre stone look bigger than its carat weight alone, so a halo stud gives more presence for the size of the centre diamond. Many clients choose them to match a halo engagement ring.
