About 2 Carat Diamond Rings

A 2 carat diamond ring is an exquisite option for an impactful engagement ring that will impress for a lifetime. With the average engagement ring diamond size closer to 1 carat, a 2 carat engagement ring is a charming and eye-catching size.

It was once far less common for couples to choose a 2 carat engagement ring, but lab grown diamonds have made larger carat weights more readily available for lower prices. In the last year, 46% of lab grown rings sold by Queensmith were 2ct or above, as revealed in our latest Lab Grown Diamond Trends Report.

How much does a 2 carat diamond ring cost?

See how much a 2ct diamond ring costs below or compare the price of a 2 carat diamond to other carat sizes.

Diamond Carat Lab Diamond (D, VS1) Natural Diamond (D, VS1)
1ct £1,410 £6,370
2ct £2,430 £26,700
3ct £3,550 £46,210

A 2 carat diamond ring costs more than twice as much as a 1 carat ring of the same quality, because diamond prices rise faster than weight – larger rough diamonds are far rarer. That's why your choice between a lab grown and natural diamond makes an even bigger difference at 2ct than at 1ct.

After that, the diamond's cut, colour, clarity and shape set the price, followed by the setting and metal. For more detail, take a look at what affects diamond price.

If you'd like to get more from your 2ct budget, we recommend:

  • Putting cut first: At this size, a well-cut diamond looks brighter and larger than a poorly cut one of the same weight.

  • Considering an elongated shape: Ovals, pears and marquise diamonds look bigger face up than a round of the same weight.

To see today's prices for individual stones, browse our loose lab grown diamonds and loose natural diamonds. Just don't forget to include the cost of setting, which starts at £1,195.

What affects the price of a 2ct diamond ring? How it affects price
Lab grown or natural The biggest single factor, and it matters even more at 2ct. Natural diamonds this size are much rarer, so the price gap between natural and lab grown is wider than at 1ct.
Cut On a 2ct diamond, cut quality is easy to see. A well-cut diamond looks bright and lively, while a poorly cut one can look dull. Excellent and Ideal grades cost more, but they’re worth prioritising.
Colour A faint tint is easier to spot on a larger diamond, so colour counts for more at 2ct. Our natural diamonds are all D–F colour, graded colourless, so they look bright and icy.
Clarity A 2ct diamond has a larger table (top facet), so inclusions can be easier to see. Higher clarity grades cost more, and our gemmologists can help you find a diamond that looks clean to the eye.
Shape Round diamonds usually cost the most per carat because the cutting process loses a vast amount of the original stone, often up to 50% to 70% of the raw rough diamond. It's also worth noting that shapes such as oval, pear and marquise look larger face up than a round of the same weight.
Setting and metal A solitaire keeps all the attention on the 2ct centre diamond, while a halo or diamond band adds small diamonds and cost. Platinum and 18K gold are priced differently.

"At 2ct, the diamond is the first thing anyone notices, so I always tell clients to put their budget into cut. Next, think about colour. A faint tint you'd never notice at 1ct becomes easier to see on a larger diamond. Get those two right and your 2ct will look exactly as it should on the hand."

Lab grown or natural: Choosing your 2 carat diamond

A 2ct lab grown diamond has the same physical, chemical and optical properties as a natural one – it's grown in a laboratory rather than formed in the earth. At 2ct, a lab grown diamond puts a centre stone of this size within reach of far more budgets, often in higher colour and clarity grades.

A natural 2ct diamond is much rarer, and many couples choose one for exactly that reason. Our natural diamonds are all D–F colour, graded colourless, and every diamond we sell – natural or lab grown – comes with an independent certificate from a grading institution such as the GIA or IGI.

Shop 2 carat rings by shape

At 2ct, shape does a lot of the talking. It decides how large the diamond looks, how it catches the light and how it sits against the band. See the most popular 2ct diamond shapes below.

2 carat oval diamond rings

The oval is the shape most searched for at 2ct, and it's easy to see why. Its length makes a 2ct oval look larger than a 2ct round – about 10mm long against about 8.2mm across – and it flatters the finger. It suits a simple solitaire just as well as a halo or a diamond band.

2 carat emerald cut diamond rings

Long step facets give an emerald cut its calm, mirror-like flashes. At 2ct the open table shows more of the diamond's interior, so our gemmologists usually suggest a higher clarity grade.

2 carat marquise diamond rings

A marquise has one of the largest face-up areas of any shape for its weight, so a 2ct marquise makes a bold statement. Set north to south it lengthens the hand; set east to west it feels more modern.

2 carat radiant cut diamond rings

A radiant combines the clean outline of an emerald cut with brilliant facets, so you get a rectangular shape with plenty of sparkle.

2 carat pear shaped diamond rings

Soft at one end and pointed at the other, a 2ct pear is romantic and a little unexpected, and it shows plenty of surface for its weight

How big is a 2 carat diamond?

Carat is a measure of weight, not size. A 2 carat diamond weighs 0.4 grams and a 2ct round measures about 8.2mm across and a 2ct oval about 10mm long. However, twice the weight doesn't mean twice the width – a 2ct round is about 1.8mm wider than a 1 carat round, though it looks noticeably bigger on the hand.

Diamond shape Approximate size at 2ct
Round About 8.2mm across
Oval About 10mm long
Emerald About 8.55mm long
Marquise About 13mm long
Radiant About 8mm long
Pear About 11mm long
Princess About 6.5mm across

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn About 2ct Diamond Rings

See "How much does a 2 carat diamond ring cost?" above for a look at our live 2ct diamond price table.

The biggest factor is whether you choose a lab grown or natural diamond. After that, it's down to the diamond's cut, colour, clarity, shape and setting.

A 2 carat engagement ring is big - and well above the average diamond size in the UK. While 2ct is very much on the larger side of engagement rings, it is still a lovely, demure size that won’t look overly flashy. A 2ct diamond ring is a great option for couples with a healthy budget, looking for an eye catching ring.

2ct diamond engagement rings are becoming increasingly common with 46% of Queensmith lab grown rings sold being 2ct or above, as revealed in our latest Lab Grown Diamond Trends Report. Lab grown diamonds have made 2ct far more achievable than it once was.

Yes. A 2ct diamond is about twice the weight of the average engagement ring diamond, and at around 8.2mm across for a round it has real presence on the hand without feeling oversized. Elongated shapes such as oval and marquise look larger still.

A 2ct diamond weighs twice as much as a 1ct, but it doesn't look twice as big. A 2ct round is about 8.2mm across against about 6.4mm for a 1ct.

The price difference is larger than the size difference, because bigger diamonds are rarer. Compare our 1 carat diamond rings to see both side by side.

What you'll pay for a 2 carat diamond depends on whether it's lab grown or natural and on its cut, colour, clarity, and shape, so prices vary widely between stones of the same weight.
